Asst. Prof. Dr. IVAN STEFANOVIĆ, Secretary General of the SMS
Born on 25 February 1964 in Belgrade.
Completed primary and secondary school in Belgrade with excellent grades.
Served his military service in 1982-83.
Enrolled at the Medical University in Belgrade in 1983, and graduated in 1988 with an average grade of 10. During his studies he received a number of awards and accolades for the results he achieved during his studies, and on the completion of his studies, the Certificate of the Serbian Medical Society for being the best graduate student of his generation.
In 1986, he received the October Award of the City of Belgrade for the best student specialist and scientific works.
On the completion of his mandatory internship and the passing of his specialist exam, in May 1993, he became employed at the Institute for Ocular Disorders at the Clinical Centre of Serbia in Belgrade, as a doctor specialising in ophthalmology.
He passed his Specialist Exam in 1993 with an excellent grade and was employed from then on as a Specialist Ophthalmologist at the Section for Vitreoretinal Surgery.
He defended his Masters thesis titled, “The Significance of ERG and VEP in the Ophthalmological Approach to the Diagnosis and Prognosis of Multiple Sclerosis,” from the area of ophthalmology, in 1992, at the Medical University in Belgrade.
He defended his doctoral dissertation titled, “Echographic Diagnostics of the Orbital Part of the Optic Nerve,” in 1999, also at the Medical University in Belgrade.
In 1994, he is chosen for the position of assistant, and from 2000 for the position of assistant professor, at the Medical University in Belgrade.
From 2001, he is employed part-time as a teacher at the University for Special Education and Rehabilitation in Belgrade.
From 1993, he has lectured at the Yugoslav School of Ultrasound in Kragujevac.
He has published the monographs “Clinical Neuroophthalmology” and “Elements of Rehabilitation of Persons with Damaged Eyesight,” and is one of the authors of the Special Education and Rehabilitation Lexicon. He has published numerous expert scientific works.
During 1996, he carried out his advanced expert training (fellowship) in Antwerp (Belgium) with Prof. Dr. Relja Živojnović.
From 2001, he is Assistant Director at the Institute for Ocular Disorders KCS.
From 2002, he is the President of the Society of Ophthalmologists of Yugoslavia, later of Serbia and Montenegro.
He is married and the father of three children.
He speaks both English and French.
